Fawlty Towers - Auditions

Rangiora Players will be presenting three episodes of the hit British TV sitcom "Fawlty Towers" at the Rangiora Town Hall, 28th - 31st July, 2010. The production is being directed by Ian Lester

We are performing the episodes:

  • A Touch of Class
  • Basil the Rat
  • Communications Problems

Audition Process

Auditions will be held Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th March at the 'Players Clubrooms, which are located at Northbrook Road, Rangiora (Click here for a Google map, which opens in new window or tab).

To book an audition slot, please contact Judith on (03) 313 7026.

The Rangiora Players pride themselves on an open and transparent audition process. There are no preselections for roles, no favoritism techniques, and no instructions are given to the Director or other memebers of the audition panel to suggest who would be "right for the role" to suit club politics. Anyone can audition with complete confidence that they will be considered on their abilities.

Roles Required

There are a number of recurring roles, and something over 24 episode specific roles, which requires a huge variety of character protrayals, from angry to nice, accented (there's call for a Cockney in there) to plain. Pretty much all these episode specific roles are absolutely essential to the episode working, as these roles provide the scenarios that Basil and co strive to work with, or often as not, against.

Obviously we would like to fill all these roles with individual people, but if there insufficient actors in North Canterbury then we will resort to doubling roles. Because of the large numbers of cast required, we encourage all actors to apply.

Because there are three seperate episodes being produced, there will be flexibility to accomodate schedules of actors who are currently mid production etc.

WikiPedia has a good page on Fawlty Towers that describes some of the roles: click here (opens in new tab or window).

Synopsis

These are from the Samuel French website

A Touch of Class

Hoping to attract a better class of guest Basil takes an advertisement in Country Life, much to Sybil's annoyance. Lord and Lady Morris book a room but before they arrive a seedy Cockney turns up on the off chance for a room which Basil reluctantly gives him. Another guest, Lord Melbury, arrives and Basil fawns all over the man even to the extent of cashing a cheque for him and allowing Melbury to go off with Basil's priceless coin collection. But the Cockney turns out to be police inspector and Melbury to be a confidence trickster. By mistake, Basil drives the real aristocracy away.

Basil the Rat

Basil comes across a strange man peering into the hotel fridge and makes his usual disparaging remarks. But Mr. Carnegie turns out to be from the Public Health Department and is not satisfied with the standards achieved and threatens closure. A long list of requirements has to be completed by the next day. Going to Manuel's room to enlist his help Basil finds Manuel's "hamster" which is, in fact, a rat, called Basil. Ordered to get rid of it, Manuel hides the rat in an outhouse although it escapes and is spotted by the Major in the bar. Basil puts rat poison on some veal but the infected piece is mixed up with other pieces. Mr. Carnegie passes the kitchen as fit and decides to take lunch there and orders the veal! Consternation as they try to find an uncontaminated piece. Meanwhile the rat pops up everywhere, including a tin of biscuits and the Major takes pot shots at it.

Communications Problems

A difficult lady guest arrives and finds fault with everything including the view from her window ("What were you hoping to see? Herds of wildebeast sweeping majestically . . . ") It transpires that her hearing aid is not working which adds to the confusion. Basil has had a hot tip on a horse but Sybil has banned betting. He manages to get a bet on, and wins, and first he tries to get Polly to hide the winnings but Sybil rumbles the ruse. Then he asks the Major to look after it but later the Major denies all knowledge of the money. Manuel proudly announces " I know nothing" and the difficult guest loses the same amount of money that Basil has won so he has to relinquish the prize in the cause of good relations!
